Butterworth Filter - The low pass filter

Butterworth Filter is a low pass filter designed to give you a cutoff curve as flat as possible, giving you maximum control of the frequencies that pass through. Unlike Filter, it doesn’t have the option of using a high pass filter. It does, however, have a flatter response, giving it a different character.

Filter parameters

The Butterworth Filter effect only has two parameters to keep track of: the cutoff and the resonance.

Cutoff

Cutoff governs the cutoff point where it lets through the frequencies below, and cuts the frequencies above.

Resonance

Resonance governs how much resonance will occur alongside attenuation giving a "ringing" feel to the sound.

How to use the Butterworth Filter

Quick filtering [Beginner]

Using the Butterworth Filter in Soundation is as easy as it can get.

    Open Soundation and create a project
  2. 2
    Double-click the channel to which you want to apply the Butterworth Filter, this will open up the bottom panel
  3. 3
    Press "+ Add effect" and select Butterworth Filter in the drop-down menu
  4. 4
    Adjust the Cutoff and Resonance to your liking

How to automate a filter sweep [Intermediate]

    Mark the channel you want to add the effect to by clicking it
  2. 2
    Click "+ Add effect" in the bottom panel and pick Butterworth Filter in the dropdown menu

    With the channel still selected, press A to bring up the automation lane
  4. 4
    Select Butterworth Filter: Cutoff from the dropdown list that says Automation
  5. 5
    Click on the line in the timeline to make dots controlling the cutoff frequency over time
